Arriving by ferry, you’re greeted by the Portara, a giant freestanding marble doorway from an unfinished temple of Apollo that glows gold at sunset. Behind the port, the old town climbs to a Venetian Kastro, a labyrinth of lanes, archways, and quiet squares perfect for an evening stroll.

Monemvasia is one of Greece’s most spectacular hidden gems — a fortified medieval town built into the flank of a huge rock that rises straight out of the sea off the southeastern Peloponnese. Hidden completely from the mainland side, it’s reached by a single causeway, and its name literally means “single entrance.”

Step through the town gate and cars vanish: the lower town is a warren of cobbled lanes, stone houses, Byzantine churches, and bougainvillea, much of it lovingly restored into boutique hotels and tavernas built right into the walls. Wandering here after the day-trippers leave, with the sea lapping below, feels like time travel.

Energetic visitors can climb the steep path to the upper town, a ruined citadel crowning the rock, where the church of Agia Sofia perches on the cliff edge with staggering views over the Aegean.
